About
About St Mawes Castle
St Mawes Castle was built in the 1540s, at the same time as Pendennis Castle across the water, to guard the entrance to the Carrick Roads. Its three round bastions around a central tower give it a clover-leaf shape, and its carved stonework is some of the finest of any of Henry VIII’s forts.
Unlike Pendennis, St Mawes surrendered without a fight during the Civil War, which helps explain why it survives in such good condition. Today you can explore the gun rooms and enjoy views across to Falmouth.
