About

About The Minack Theatre

The Minack Theatre was created by Rowena Cade, who began building it with her own hands in the 1930s in the garden of her clifftop home. The first performance, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, was staged in 1932. Over the following decades she and her helpers shaped terraces, seats and a stage from the rock, with the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop.

Today the Minack stages a season of plays, musicals, music and family shows, mainly from spring to autumn. During the day visitors can explore the theatre, the clifftop gardens of sub-tropical plants and the exhibition telling Rowena Cade’s story.

Plan your visit

Shows and day visits are popular, so book ahead. Bring warm layers and a cushion for evening performances, as the stone seats get chilly. The lane to the theatre is steep and narrow, and parking is limited at busy times.
