About
About Tintagel Castle
Tintagel Castle is famous for its links with the legend of King Arthur. The ruins you see today date mainly from the 13th century, when Richard, Earl of Cornwall built a castle here, but archaeology shows that the headland was an important settlement and trading place long before that, in the 5th to 7th centuries.
A footbridge opened in 2019 now links the mainland courtyard with the island, following the line of the narrow neck of land that once joined them. On the island you can explore the castle ruins, the remains of early medieval buildings, and the bronze sculpture known as Gallos, with sweeping views along the Atlantic coast.

The site is managed by English Heritage and it is best to book tickets in advance, especially in summer. There are many steep steps and uneven paths, so wear good shoes and allow a couple of hours. The castle is a 10–15 minute walk downhill from the village car parks.
