About Bodmin Jail
Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 during the reign of George III and was one of the first prisons designed with separate cells for prisoners. It was used until the 1920s, and during the First World War it kept some of the nation’s most precious treasures, including the Crown Jewels and the Domesday Book, safe from harm.
Today the jail is a visitor attraction, with an immersive “Dark Walk” experience that brings its history to life, and the former Naval Prison has been restored as a hotel.
