A drunk couple who fell in to the river in Truro yesterday sparked a 45 minute rescue.
The fire brigade and police were called out at around 16:00pm yesterday afternoon after getting numerous calls from the public.
Members of the public were on the scene to try and help the stranded couple by using a float usually used for people who are drowning.
Lee Wright who took a video of the couple said that they tried to help them out but they weren’t having any of it. He went on to jokingly say ‘’ On the upside, at least you will have beautiful skin in the morning’’
Police and a specialist water rescue team from Falmouth were also sent to the scene.
Chris who was also there said ‘’ There were a few of us that tried to rescue them with a ring. They had both been drinking and maybe more but we think they fell in after dropping a bottle wine in the mud. They were completely out of it and when we threw them the ring to lift them out they didn’t want to be rescued. In the end the fire brigade were called and they managed to get them out just in time, as the tide was coming in. ‘’
He said: ‘The risk of mud in Truro is considerable here so we’re looking into intensive training and equipment to deal with these ever increasing incidents.
‘In this situation it was just a case of getting a ladder down to them.
‘It took some time as they were obviously intoxicated.’
The couple were wrapped in hypothermia blankets before paramedics took them to hospital.
